The Kernel:

The Kernel is the core, the lowest level of Linux that has control over everything in the system. It talks with the computer's hardware.

The Shell:

The Shell (or “sh”) is the user interface, the primary way to interact with servers. It provides the directives that are typed through Commands on the Command Line (or terminal) and relays them to the kernel to process between hardware and applications. (To note, Most Linux versions use a shell called Bash, which is “Bourne-Again Shell,” although you can use a different shell, but that is probably not for beginners).

Why Choose Linux?

What makes Linux different from other operating systems, and why should you choose it? There are some differences which you should be familiar with if you chose to use Linux over other operating systems.

It is FREE. Free, as in it is Open Source, meaning that the code is open for anyone to use, replicate or change as they see fit. It also is free as in it does not cost money, however that is secondary. The other benefit is that the OS system, in all of its various distributions, are constantly being updated, added to, changed, or inspiring spin offs (the distributions, or distros as you will see), from Linux. Those distributions are also obligated to be open source based on anti-trust laws and licensing that requires any future “family members” to adhere to the same public sharing structure. Nothing is kept secret. Everything is open.

Due to this open sourcing, there are communities that center around the development, use and feedback of the various Linux distros. These are advantageous to those newbies who need to know how to do something, how to troubleshoot, or just know how something works. Information exchanges are encouraged. There are many forums online where one can find this type of help, outside of looking at Commands and help pages in the operating system itself.

Best Operation System

Another consideration of Linux fans is that you are not dealing with third party companies who may then own or use your data in some way. It is your data, in your storage and sometimes on your server.

Linux is alive. You can use and revitalize older systems. Linux can be installed on old systems. The best part is that you can create what you want or need, and leave the rest behind. You cannot do this with a Windows OS, for example. It is super flexible. You can choose from many environments (for the appearance).
